Therefore Glaze helps design and implement IoT Cloud Platforms and simplify deploying, managing and operating these cloud platforms. Glaze can tailor a complete custom Industrial IoT cloud platform or we can use our own reference platform (Beacon Tower) as either a stepping stone or as an out-of-the-box solution. Whether it is a custom solution or based on our own Beacon Tower we have a go-to process that spans from business case development to implementation, operations and maintenance and we have zoomed in on the IoT Cloud part of the process in this figure Glaze IoT Cloud Platform Process . The process is based on experiences with launching numerous global IoT Cloud solutions for leading Scandinavian companies. In volatile market conditions, conservative industrial giants must move faster to survive. The digital transformation of traditional manufacturing firms cannot — and must not — simply be about making existing industrial processes more efficient. These organizations must recognize the opportunity to use digital services as a way to create more sustainable and profitable customer relationships, continuously aligning product value to changing customer requirements. But the physical products (and the hard-won industrial skills that created them) don’t go away. A rich digital experience does not replace a well-built premium car or a dependable and resilient piece of industrial machinery. Rather, digital services augment the product and enable designing, building, selling, using, and valuing it in new ways. While the physical products certainly endure, the companies that built them must change to survive, investing in digital services and baking it deeply into everything they do. IoT is core to industrial companies’ efforts to bridge the divide between the physical and the virtual. Glaze’s IoT Cloud Platform Services helps the design of connected products and create connected insights. The typical scenarios are illustrated here with our Beacon Tower set-up as Edge and Cloud platform: The challenge is not to establish an IoT Cloud Platform in a matter of days. All major Cloud Providers have accelerators and preconfigured solutions, that makes this possible. And most sensor manufacturers offer some sort of Cloud solution as part of their service. The challenge is to establish a flexible, scalable and cost-effective platform that will be a good platform for further analysis and use of the data. At Glaze, we are working intensively with IoT Cloud Platforms and we know the pitfalls – having worked in this area since 2015. All too often, IoT Data Collection is implemented without proper consideration of the various options available. We know that it is important to have realistic expectations to the journey. A design that is chosen, without proper experience and analysis, often ends up being too costly thus creating an obvious risk that the IoT Business Case is discontinued for the wrong reasons. Another mistake, we have seen often, is to choose a closed platform, where data ends up, isolated in a silo, making data analysis, predictive maintenance or remote monitoring, machine learning and integration with business IT, practically impossible. That is why we recommend to : - Evaluate the requirements for your IoT Cloud Platform, hereunder to fully understand edge and business IT integration points - Minimize the risk by using standard solutions - Maintain ownership and access to the data At Glaze, we have established a starting point for an IoT Cloud Platform , based on our experiences from the projects we have been involved in. We continue to adjust the platform based on development in the Ecosystems and the experiences from our projects. We call this platform Beacon Tower . It includes solutions to many of the things that need to be considered – Device Provisioning, Asset Management and Multi Tenancy are the most obvious, but also the choice of the right database, management and visualisation for time series data is very important. So let us help you with valuable process, architecture and implementation experiences within: - Sensor and Edge (e.g. PLC, SCADA, MES, DCS, Historians) Integration - Device Provisioning - Digital Twin - Asset Management - Multi Tenancy - Data Retention procedures - Time Series Database and Presentation - Alarms and notifications - API for User Management - API for Business Integration ### INDUSTRIAL EDGE COMPUTING URL: https://glazeholding.com/industrial-edge-computing/ IoT devices generate sensitive information about company operations and customers and transmit the data using specialised protocols to local Edge Gateways (also known as Field Agents or Field Gateway), and then over the internet. In the industrial space, IoT brings connectivity to buildings, assets, and critical infrastructure that have traditionally not been connected. An enterprise Edge should incorporate security components to ensure device attestation, network connectivity, software upgrades, authentication, identity and access management, data loss prevention and maybe local pre-processing and filtration of data. Based on our insights and experiences within development of embedded systems and Automation Systems (also called Operational Technology (OT)), we can interface locally to existing systems, e.g. MES, Scada, Historians, PLCs and various sensors, or we can establish an entirely new Edge solution including development of electronics with our partners. Here follows a few Edge categories and questions from Glaze Business Innovation and Development Framework that we recommend to examine when designing the Edge and back-end Data Collection integration. The challenge is not to measure data and make the data available for a cloud solution. Almost every sensor has means of delivering Cloud data. Almost any sensor manufacturer offers data collection as part of the service. The challenge is to measure data persistently and reliably. To do this with the required data quality. And to deliver data to the Cloud in a form that is cost effective, flexible and tolerant against transmission problems while having full ownership of data. At Glaze, we have a background with Embedded Devices and OT development, and we know the importance of having a stable system that has a short time to market. All too often, Embedded Systems or OT are over engineered and build on technology that is outdated even before the system is launched. On the other hand, it is our experience, that it is important to handle all relevant exceptions. Typically, 80% of the software in an Embedded System is exception handling. If actual real-life exceptions are not handled properly, the system fails. That is why we recommend to - Use standard mature components where possible - Establish proof of concept of system functionality and business case early - Maintain flexibility by using standard interfaces Using standard components, makes it possible to have a working prototype of the system early on. This almost always proves to be a good decision, as it reveals the system or business case short comes. At Glaze we have experience with a wide range of OT and device vendors with standard interfaces, that will most likely fit your purpose. We also recommend using standard Edge Gateways, that has all normal interfaces built-in – MQTT, IO-Link, Modbus, OPC UA Server, Profibus, CANbus, DeviceNet, EtherCAT etc. ### CLOUD ARCHITECTURE AND BUSINESS INTEGRATION URL: https://glazeholding.com/cloud-architecture-and-business-integration/ The diverse array of Industrial IoT use cases requires software integration and APIs to support relevant business processes and applications. Industrial IoT Cloud Platforms should enable developers to easily create code, business rules, and data management capabilities integrated while ensuring security and manageability. When designing an enterprise IoT Cloud development tools, scripting tools, API links, and API management tools should support integration with enterprise applications such as ERP, CRM, Connected Field Services and tools for Advanced Analytics. The importance of establishing the right open architecture, that gives an easy integration to other business systems and prevents silos, cannot be overestimated. Our consultants will always work to make the integration as easy as possible and they have knowledge and experience with many specific systems. The challenge is not to hook into the IoT data and use it as another Business System. Almost anything you can think of is possible. Give a good Cloud Architect access to your system, and the Architect will fix it. No problem. It may take some time, but it will work. At least for some time. The challenge is to make the Architecture so open and flexible, that it is economically feasible to build a stable and robust solution that uses the data somewhere else. If you achieve this, you will promote the Digitalization of your Business. At Glaze, our Cloud Architects have years of experience from building solutions that involves system integration. We work daily with the latest technologies in Software and Clod development. We have up to date experience with Kubernetes, Microservices, Service Fabric, Docker Containers, DevOps and Continuous Integration / Delivery (CI/CD) and we use many resources to always keep us updated. To build a Cloud Architecture that promotes Business Integration, it is important to - Design with open interfaces and APIs - Establish proof of concept of the business case early - Think ahead – use the Business IT roadmap actively It is not an easy task and it will take time, but it is important to focus on the next step on your Digital Journey. The easiest solutions are tempting and will give you a lower development cost, at least in the short term. But if you later have to refactor the code or rebuild the Architecture, you may have chosen the wrong decisions in the first place. ### PROJECT EXECUTION AND EXPERT RESOURCES URL: https://glazeholding.com/project-execution-and-expert-resources/ We have customers that wish us to be their trusted advisor while they build up their own organisation, we have customers that wants us to supply them with an experienced cloud architect and we have customers that trust us to implement the whole project. Having people with the right skills, competencies and experiences are key when implementing IoT projects, regardless of how the project is carried out. We have strong skills when the projects need to be executed. We have employed Project Managers, Cloud Architects and Cloud Developers, combined with a broad network of partners within e.g. Sensors, Embedded Development, Edge Gateways, Augmented Reality, Machine Learning and all sorts of Microsoft technology (e.g. infrastructure, .NET applications, Dynamics (365), Office 365) that make it possible for us to help our customers regardless of how they want to move forward. The challenge is not to plan a cheap and fast project. Every consultant can make a plan in no time, showing exactly what you hope to see. Although Development Cost and Delivery Time are always on the top of the priority list, they are not the only priority. The challenge is to balance Quality, Development Cost/Time and Functionality. The project is not successful if you fail on one of these parameters. If you are looking for a specific technical competence for your IT Development, a broader holistic view on your solution or a resource that can manage your development project, we will most likely be able to help you. With access to our qualified network of full-time freelancers and part-time advisors we always find a solution to our customers resource needs. We believe that a successful project need - The right project team - Balancing of quality, functionality and cost - Planning of the development process and the timescale in an iterative approach The most important condition for a successful project is a team that works. The team works if it has the right competencies, if it cooperates productively and if it is available. At Glaze, we have a team of project managers, that have focused on this discipline for a long time. We know that it is important to highlight risks and to balance all expectations to the scope of the project. We know that the devil lies in the detail and that detailed planning is important, but also that planning is guessing about the unknowns. Let us help you moving your project forward. ### MEDICAL DEVICE & APP (SaMD) CONSULTANCY URL: https://glazeholding.com/medical-device-and-app-consultancy/ Driven by many years of experience within the area of Design and Development of Medical Devices and Apps (SaMD) we offer you our expertise within - Compliance, QMS development and QA - Design Control, including Systems engineering, Requirements engineering, Architectural Design, Verification and Validation - Safety Risk Management and Cybersecurity - Management of Software Development, Advanced Algorithms, and Machine Learning - Compliance of projects within SaMD, Digital Health and Connectivity - Audit, internal and supplier, by lead auditors We make up a very strong and experienced team, that we believe can give you invaluable advice when starting up your Medical Device or App (SaMD) Development Project. The energy solution automatically chooses the most suitable way for each battery to either store or use power locally or sell the power to the grid. Glaze has helped design and develop the cloud and edge platform that enables each Battery Management System to intelligently dispose its energy based on the weather forecast, energy prices and power-consumption. Lithium Balance has for many years developed and sold battery management systems, but energy storage systems are a new market for the company. Within the first year, the first test solutions will be installed in 30 different locations in Denmark, Scotland and Spain. These range from small battery systems with a capacity of 10 kWh to single-family houses and large systems of 100-250 kWh for larger properties. Glaze has helped Lithium Balance with design and development of the IIoT solution, which, in short, consists of edge computing for real-time and offline site control of the battery and the IoT cloud platform that delivers a 24-hour plan for management of the energy storage system. Microsoft Azure is used as IoT cloud platform and its corresponding IoT Edge functionality for connecting the site controller and the cloud. The solution extends the possibilities from local model only to a more intelligent control of the energy storage system with cloud utilization enabling machine learning and 3rd party data sources. The cloud solution retrieves real time data, including electricity prices and weather forecasts, and together with data from the individual energy storage system, it is possible to configure the specific energy management model for the next 24 hours of the customer’s energy storage system. Quote: “Glaze has delivered outstanding consultancy and they have really applied their knowledge to utilise Microsoft Azure as an IoT cloud platform with a no-nonsense approach”, says Lars Kruse Director, Energy Systems, Lithium Balance. ### Ectogrid URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/ectogrid/ ectogrid™ is a new revolutionising energy system that shares thermal energy flows between buildings. The name ectogrid™ comes from ectothermic animals. Ectogrid™ can just like an ectothermic animal shift temperature to adjust to the surrounding environment. In modern cities there are enough thermal energy flows generated by human activity to provide the base for both heating and cooling of the entire city. By connecting buildings with different needs and balancing residual thermal energy flows between them, ectogrid™ effectively uses and reuses all available thermal energy and makes it possible to decrease both pollution and the energy consumption in a city. This is a revolution that will help us fight climate change and transform the energy market. Glaze is helping E.ON developing their ectocloud™ in an agile and effective way. ectocloud™ is based on Microsoft Azure and controls the ectogrid™by using algorithms and data about typical demands over time of users, dates, seasons, weather, local energy production and energy trading prices. The ectocloud™ system optimizes the energy flows and storage. ### Topdanmark URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/topdanmark/ Topdanmark intend to continue to be a leading insurance company in the Danish market. Therefore, Topdanmark aims at continuously combining new technology and digitization with competent experience within insurance and risk assessment. With the emergence of the Internet of Things comes new possibilities such as the opportunity to add a new layer of proactive prevention to the traditional insurance business model of damage compensation. Topdanmark has responded to that challenge by developing its own IoT platform and by working on several different use cases. As Topdanmark is a big insurance player in the agricultural market one of the use cases aim at helping farmers to monitor the slurry level and additional metrics of their slurry tanks through the landmand.dk portal which is developed by SEGES and used by many farmers to get an overview of key performance indicators, business partners and other relevant farming information. Slurry is an important asset for the farmer as fertilizer to his fields but it’s also a cost that requires investments in handling and storage. And it’s not without any risks. Each year several damages on slurry tanks are registered. The damages usually occur when the height of the groundwater is greater than the slurry level in the tank. When the slurry level reaches a critically low point tanks are in danger of bursting because the bottom of the tank doesn’t withstand the pressure from the groundwater. This causes great distress for the farmer, it’s a costly affair for the insurance company and it can have devastating consequences for the environment. In collaboration with SEGES Topdanmark are therefore working on developing a digital solution that helps the farmer to monitor the slurry level and detect anomalies by triggering actionable alerts in real-time to prevent damages. Topdanmark access data from tanks equipped with a sensor which is collected and processed by the IoT platform and made available for the farmer through the landmand.dk portal. Thereby, the farmer gets a better overview which makes it more convenient to optimize storage capacity and planning of spreading to the fields. In addition, the farmer gets a warning when it’s time to stop filling a tank or when the level is becoming critically low. Thereby, damages and slurry spills can be avoided. Glaze has participated in developing the cloud-based IoT platform used to integrate with sensors and sensor providers. Glaze also helped develop proof-of-concept sensors and end-user applications (mobile web app). Quote: ”Glaze quickly provided the right consultant with both hardware skills and excellent backend competencies, which was essential when having only a small but agile team!” – Kjetil Kraemer, Digital Officer, Head of IoT ### E.ON URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/e-on/ E.ON 100Koll is an energy and smart-home solution helping customers understand their energy usage and controlling appliances through Wifi. 100Koll is a platform where E.ON will integrate new innovative products and services helping their customers to a more comfortable life. Glaze has contributed with project management, cloud and overall architecture and business case development. 100Koll visualizes your electricity consumption in real time. When you see how much electricity you use, and what devices who consume the most, it becomes easier to reduce consumption. Electronic gadgets in standby mode is one of the home’s most common energy thieves. With 100Koll you can schedule your TV, cable box and the computer so they do not standby and use electricity unnecessarily. With 100Koll you can control your gadgets remotely through a smart phone app. Perfect for those wishing to set up lighting and washing machine in time for his return. Or be sure that you shut down the coffee machine. The challenge was to launch a product that allows the users to monitor their power consumption while enabling E.ON to utilise useful and GDPR-compliant data. The product has launched and is succesfully used in thousand of Swedish homes. ### Sonosteam URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/sonosteam/ Campylobacter continues to be the most commonly reported gastrointestinal bacterial pathogen in humans in the EU and has been so since 2005. Whereas Salmonella is the second most common cause of foodborne diseases. The ameliorating effect of SonoSteam is well documented through several studies and SonoSteam has the potential to create great log reductions. However, when treating food surfaces, one has to find the optimal balance between achieving the best log reduction and avoiding visible skin changes. Sonosteam’s product, the IA Poultry, has successfully been developed to perform this delicate balance and SonoSteam has been part of the effort to reduce Campylobacter exposure to the UK customers. The equipment is currently installed at four locations in the UK and each equipment is treating nearly one million broilers every week. The next step for Sonosteam is to use a connected 3D-printed test chicken together with a cloud enabled processing plant in order to have consistent data on usage and quality compliance, while also enabling for new maintenance services. Glaze is responsible for the development of the test chicken (embedded software, sensors and electronics) and cloud platform based on Microsoft Azure, where data from the processing plants and the chicken data are stored, processed and visualized for use by customers and SonoSteam. The processing plant sends data to the Azure cloud from a Schneider PLC and Microsoft Azure’s preconfigured “Remote Monitoring” solution has been utilized in order to reduce time-to-market and costs and the solution has been customized to SonoSteam’s need for an enterprise set-up with different levels of access and aggregated views on all customer sites. ### Acconeer URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/acconeer/ With breakthrough technology Acconeer has developed a microradar that opens up a new world for human interaction. Specifically, they were in the need of a partner that had the technical foundation for clarifying the unique technical solutions and business model for investors, while acting as sparring partners during the product development. Glaze has assisted Urban Water within ideation & strategy, hereunder with applications for funds, business development for new markets and also a potential IPO (Initial public offering (IPO) or stock market launch). Quote: “Glaze has provided me with exactly the consultancy I needed. I enjoyed their flexibility and ability to very quickly understand our product and market, and ultimately they successfully helped me gain substantial funds.” Flemming Lind, CEO/Founder. ### FLSmidth URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/flsmidth/ FLSmidth is collecting several hundreds of signals every minute from their machines around the world and bring them together in the cloud to provide asset health, process optimization and do advanced analytics on them. Glaze has participated in architecting and implementing the Microsoft Azure based IIoT-data collection platform at FLSmidth. It is primarily in asset health and process optimization, that there are improvements to pick up on in terms of productivity and sustainability. In an industry, where increased costs and significant emission of CO2 is the norm, even small performance improvements and reductions in energy consumption on a few percent matter. Downtime on the machinery can be reduced through condition-based maintenance, where a part is replaced, or the machine is repaired based on the customer’s own operating data instead of the manufacturer’s instructions. Glaze has participated in developing a prototype of cost-effective cloud platform that could be offered to FLSmidth’s customers from all over the globe. The first phase of the project was about setting the target architecture. Next phase of the IIoT project was all about scale, reliability, cost effectiveness and monitoring as more sensors were connected to the IIoT Platform. Quote: “Glaze has throughout the project delivered required consultancy and been a reliable partner” says Umid Akhmedov, FLSmidth. ### BRIMON URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/brimon/ Brimon is developing a new revolutionary infrastructure wear monitoring solution, primarily to significantly reduce the lifetime cost of highways. The product continuously measures and analyzes flow and coupled axle load, being the main parameters determining road wear. The data that are stored and analyzed in a cloud solution enables highly accurate specifications for construction and maintenance planning. This is unique and has not been possible before. Hence, this solution can revolutionize the market, having a potential of saving enormous costs in this worldwide multi-billion industry. Brimon´s predecessor Brosys began its operation in the spring of 2003 with design and classification of bridges, pioneering in 3D technology. After many years in the bridge construction industry the company built up a rather unique expertise in analysis and design of complex structures, which resulted in additional business areas such as bridge classification and data for bridge dispensing. This expertise led to an acquisition of Brosys during 2015 when Brimon was established to stay ahead of competition. Brimon formed a cooperation agreement with Glaze in order to professionalize and ramp up their product development and market penetration. Glaze has provided project management, enterprise design and a business plan. The cooperation has added significant competence value to Brimon in the project prototyping and subsequent commercialization phases. Quote: ”The cooperation with Glaze, has accelerated our project as well as putting new energy into it, which has benefitted our new technology and makes us reach our goals”, Tore Nilsson CEO. ### Regin URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/regin/ Regin is a global supplier of hardware and SCADA system for indoor climate control and building automation. Glaze was asked to support Regin in understanding the challenges and opportunities in migrating their SCADA solution to the cloud. This included investigating both the generic risks and possibilities with using cloud services and Regin’s specific challenges in relation to their existing software, hardware, company strategy and customer requirements. The rapid evolving Smart Building market will create new requirements for Regin in order to be able to integrate with other platforms to not risk being surpassed by larger competitors with more advanced platforms. An IoT Cloud and Edge solution will make it significantly easier to keep up with these requirements and at the same time reduce their general development cost when doing for example hardware changes or adapting to different building automation protocols, e.g. BACnet, Modbus etc. Regin have a large amount of different solutions and customer requirements that need to be considered when evaluating a migration to the cloud. The challenge that Glaze supported was to set an overall architecture that will reduce Regin’s general development cost using standardized IoT cloud components and utilize the benefits of the cloud such as reduced infrastructure startup and scaling cost while at the same time taking into account the different customer requirements such as on-premise solutions. ### Fluisense URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/fluisense/ Fluisense’s innovative fully portable and automated blood sampling system, Fluispotter®, is a unique new technology to be used for collection and storage of blood samples over the course 24 hours or less with minimal blood loss. The Fluispotter is programmable and will collect the samples according to individually designed sampling schedules decided by the user. Drops of blood are dispensed onto a roll of special paper at a requested rate, and can subsequently be analyzed one by one. Strategic focus on entering the market for human use, made a CE approval according to the Medical Device Directive (MDD) imperative. Glaze’s experience with the development of medical devices has been valuable in achieving this goal. Together with colleagues from Prevas, Qmed Consulting and Techpeople we have helped Fluisense in a speed version of a traditional medical device development project. Naturally, the areas of approvals, safety and software within medical devices, was a challenge to Fluisense as there was limited experience within these areas. But also the transformation of the company from sandbox development to controlled and documented development has been interesting and it has been beneficial for Fluisense to bring in consultants in this change. Quote: Ulf S. Skimmeland, the CEO at Fluisense says: “Having a person with managing capabilities and a vast experience in medical device development joining the project has been essential to the project. The ability to communicate at all levels and the tools used to structure the work at Fluisense proves the experience from similar situations and works very well with us.“ ### Acarix URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/acarix/ Bringing 21st century technology and mathematics together, the new CADScor® System signifies dramatic changes to advanced auscultation (listening to the internal sounds of the body). The Acarix CADScor® System combines world class Danish acoustic knowledge and advanced algorithms into a new method for obtaining a patient specific CAD-score, for estimating the risk of suffering from coronary artery disease. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the most common heart disease affecting up to 50% of the westernized population during their lifetime. CAD is however not restricted to the industrialized world but also increasing dramatically in expanding economies like Brasilia, Russia, India, and China as well as in the developing world. The value of persistent commitment is essential in medical device development. Glaze technical project management experience is essential to the success of Acarix. The The Acarix CADScor® System project has been through all phases from the specification and architecture of the product through the MDD approval and all the way to maintenance, support and product updates and in that process Acarix has used technical expertise and management from Prevas, Kapacitet and Glaze. One of the main challenges in the project has been to bring together the culture from a number of very different persons and companies. Mechanical Design, University Research, Production Facilities and Software Quality have all been coordinated in order to achieve the same goal – of getting the product to the market. Quote: Claus BV Christensen, the COO at Acarix says: “We have enjoyed good overall budget adherence, expected technical expertise, and deadlines within agreed limits. The use of a dedicated project manager is an important asset for any project, to keep momentum, while the client is concentrating on other business. Keeping solid records (hours, budget, progression) and being able to analyze and communicate these important measures built transparency, trust and confidence. So I would recommend to keep that project structure for clients like Acarix, with limited electronic development resources and knowledge.” ### Swedish Net URL: https://glazeholding.com/project/swedish-net/ Swedish Net is specialised in technical and physical protection for facilities with high security requirements. Swedish Net has carried out advanced projects for nuclear power plants, airports, penal institutions, embassies, and national security projects. Glaze has advised within strategy and ideation. Before the year 2013 Swedish Net had focus on solutions, many of these were concentrated within nuclear power plants. This however proved to be a vulnerable strategy as government removed the strategic support and thus much of the budget for nuclear power plants. This was a big hit for Swedish Net. In the end of 2013 they turned to Glaze in order to revise strategy. In 2014 together with Glaze’s advisors a strategic change was done in their service offers and a focus on consultancy services were chosen. The result of the cooperation has so far been very positive as the turn-over and profit have doubled with a planned quadrupling in 2018. Quote: “We are very pleased with the cooperation with Glaze and the significant results it has resulted in. We look forward to continue our strategic cooperation in the years to come and we can recommend to utilize Glaze and their advisors who have shown great ability to understand our complex service area and the corresponding business logic”, Markus Selme CEO.
